Monitoring of the Marine VHF Network - Coast Guard Melbourne and the Limited Coast Radio Stations
The monitoring of the marine repeaters and the VHF Distress and Calling frequencies became a real challenge, how to monitor a repeater located on a remote site such as Mount Oberon from a Limited Coast Radio Station located at Paynesville? Prior to the days of the internet, linking would need to be done purely with UHF or Microwave links, requiring additional space on towers, additional tranceivers and administration including site inductions.
Welcome to the world of the internet, in particular, Radio Over Internet Protocol (RoiP). Marcus Grinblat took the lead on this project and spent many hours over several months investigating the functional capabilities (and limitations) in order to implement a scope of work that could be tendered, costed and scheduled.
Marcus landed on the omnitronics solution, with head office located in Western Australia, Marcus soon became 'subject matter expert' in the installation and maintenance of both hardware and software systems. Peter Tyers, based at Paynesville and Communications Manager for the Coast Guard Gippsland Squadron, partnered with Marcus to ensure Limited Coast Radio Stations across Gippsland integrated into the network seemlessly.
